I have finally taken the big step into trying to ensure my creations go to loving homes, rather than been stuck in an over-flowing cupboard! This has been my dream for years, but with work always getting in the way, I only managed the odd handmade card sold to generous friends and family.
However, having been made redundant for the second time, I have decided to work in an industry I love and have recently started working in a quilting and patchwork shop in Hereford, and I'm loving it. Not only am I surrounded by some beautiful fabrics, but I also get to meet some lovely like-minded people who just love making things!
I am also getting round to learning more about those crafts that have always fascinated me. I taught myself to crochet a few years ago and can't seem to stop making flowers and in-the-round cushions. I'm getting the knack of machine-stitching delicate pieces of fabric into surprising designs and have just learnt how to quilt-as-you-go, and I will get round to knitting those socks... one day!
I am really excited about the booming interest in the craft industry at the moment. More and more people are coming round to the idea that homemade or handmade is the way forward. For those of you out there who haven't the time, or the inclination, to make that special pressie for a loved one, there are people like me to help you out. Gifts made with love and care by someone who has put their heart into something, surely means so much more to the receiver than factory-processed stuff bought and sold for pennies, made by anonymous people miles away who are treated like animals and paid a pittance.
